Futoshiki: instructions and practice

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Futoshiki. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Build familiarity through play

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

What you are aiming for

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Using the playing area

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A closer look at one example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Pay attention to this rule

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
