Shikaku: learn through an example

Take a moment with Shikaku before moving to another game. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

A small practice goal

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Keep the objective visible.

What the game asks you to do

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Start here and follow along

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Using the playing area

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

An important reminder

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. Compare the situation with the worked example. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
