Making your first moves in Peg Solitaire

Start Peg Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Read the objective before making your first input. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

An idea for your next attempt

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

Your objective

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Keyboard and screen controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

One detail worth checking

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
