Getting started with Hitori

Try Hitori at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Shade repeated numbers while keeping black cells separated and all white cells connected. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Play twelve 5×5 puzzles. Any shaded starting cells remain fixed.

Build familiarity through play

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you are aiming for

Shade repeated numbers while keeping black cells separated and all white cells connected. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Making your moves

  1. Click a cell to shade, mark or clear it.
  2. No unshaded number may repeat in a row or column.
  3. Black cells cannot share an edge.
  4. Check puzzle verifies duplicates and connectivity.

How to interact with the game

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Follow the example

Two identical unshaded numbers in one row cannot both remain. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Removing every duplicate can disconnect white cells. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
